HEARING & BALANCE
Hearing Loss:
Hearing loss is a common condition that affects the ability to hear and understand speech. It can occur due to exposure to loud noise, certain medications, infections, genetics, and aging. The most common type of hearing loss is age-related hearing loss, also known as presbycusis, which affects older adults, over time.
The most common treatment for hearing loss are hearing aids. These devices, with continuous use during all waking hours, can help strengthen the muscles in the brain by stimulating specific areas in the cortex when amplifying sounds to make them clearer for people with hearing loss. In addition to these devices, auditory rehabilitation is used to improve communication skills for people with hearing loss, right in the office.
If hearing loss is not treated, a number of risk factors may arise, including cognitive decline, isolation, and a decline in overall quality of life. Studies have shown that people with untreated hearing loss are more likely to be at risk of acquiring dementia, increased difficulty with word recognition, attention, memory and spatial awareness leading to balance disorders.
It's important to see a qualified Audiologist, who specializes in hearing healthcare. Upon the evaluation, a recommendation is made for the best treatment options for your individual needs. With the right support, individuals with hearing loss can lead fulfilling lives and stay connected with their loved ones and communities. With our state of the art technology, best care, and best provider in New York City, Dagan Medical is available for you.
Acquired Hearing Loss:Â
Acquiring hearing loss as a result of an accident or occupation with noise exposure is a growing concern. Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a type of hearing loss caused by prolonged exposure to loud noise. Individuals who work in loud environments, such as MTA transit employees, first responders, construction site workers, and performers and stage crews are at a higher risk of developing NIHL. In addition, accidents that cause trauma to the head or ear can also result in hearing loss. Taking proper safety measures such as wearing ear protection, limiting the time of exposure to loud noise, and by seeking immediate medical attention after an accident. It is also important to remember that noise-induced hearing loss can occur gradually, so it's important to take preventative measures and to be aware of any signs of hearing loss.
